APPLE MOSTARDA for THANKSGIVING

This is a delicious tangy sweet/sour relish from Northern Italy, and it’s perfect for holidays, a charcuterie board, alongside a roast chicken or with Brie and bread…you’ll LOVE this! For approx. 2 cups, you’ll need:

1 lemon, zested

2 apples or pears, small dice (in summer I used nectarines – yum!)

3-4 Tb. brown sugar – depends on the fruit

¼ C. vinegar

½ C. raisins soaked in 2 Tb brandy or wine – optional but good

1/4 C. water

2 Tb. olive oil

2 Tb. mustard seeds (toast gently with a bit of oil in a fry pan for a minute or so)

1 tsp. Dijon mustard

In a medium saucepan, combine the first 6 ingredients. Stir to combine, bring to a boil, then turn it to med low and let cook, stirring occasionally till the apples or whatever you’re using get soft; about 20-25 minutes. When things get thick, smell great and look well combined, add the oil, seeds, and Dijon. Stir well and let cool slightly before serving. Think roast pork, white cheese, chicken, even on a sandwich…..SO good!! www.maryjwhite.com
